Saturday 20th April 1996
Understands that Deepika gets threatened.
Deepika's behaviour is unacceptable says Lall Khan, leadership member in Oslo's oldest Muslim congregation, Islamic Cultural Centre.
The congregation has 1800 members in Oslo which receives approximately 500,000.00 kroners in government support.
Khan says:
- That Deepika throws off her clothes and performs half naked is absolutely disliked in the Pakistani community here in Norway. Our culture and our religion does not accept that Muslims should behave the way she does, says Khan. He thinks that Deepika is a bad example for other Muslims and a bad representative for the Muslim community in Norway.
- It is not right to threaten her, but I can understand that people react in such a way to her. It is natural that Muslims react to her behaviour.
VG journalist: But Isn't Deepika Norwegian, born in Norway?
Lall Khan: - Yes, but she is a Muslim.
VG journalist: How long does she have to be different from Norwegian girls?
Lall Khan: - That's a good question. We feel it is important to protect our identity, our culture and our religion. She could still be Norwegian if she could put on more clothes.
VG journalist: So according to you she has too little clothes on?
Lall Khan: - Yes absolutely. We also do not like that she is a Muslim and performs in discotheques-- for example.
VG journalist: Isn't it positive that she can be both Norwegian and Muslim at the same time?
Lall Khan: - She first and foremost has to be a Muslim.
VG journalist: Is she not allowed to be a believing person even though she shows her belly button?
Lall Khan: - No, not according to Islam. This is a breach of Islamic law. Women should be covered and only show their face.

Pakistani Soul
Deepika Grows Up
The 18 year old Deeyah releases 2nd solo album. Here on the Front cover of Dagbaldet.
The reason people in the media always like to refer to Deeyah's Pakistani heritage of her father more than the Afghan heritage of her mother is because the biggest non white immigrant community in Norway is of Pakistanis (and most media attention Pakistanis had before Deeyah was only about the high rate of crime in the Pakistani community in Norway) and obviously because Deeyah's dad is from Pakistan.
